Facial Growth Orthodontics
What is Facial Growth Orthodontics?
The goal of traditional orthodontics is to straighten your teeth and create a healthy, properly aligned bite. However, in adult patients, bite problems like overbite, underbite, and crossbite are challenging to treat. These conditions can lead to TMJ, compromised facial aesthetics, poor facial symmetry, and obstructive sleep apnea. Jaw surgery is the only treatment option available to many adult patients, and often requires the use of braces before and after surgery to achieve the desired results.
Today, Dr. Anderson is proud to offer a non-surgical alternative to traditional orthodontic treatment to his patients. Our practice offers facial growth orthodontics, a surgery-free jaw correction treatment. With facial growth orthodontics, Dr. Anderson can correct your jaw position, enhance your smile, and improve your face's overall symmetry and aesthetics.
How Do Facial Growth Orthodontics Work?
Dr. Anderson uses special oral appliances that fit comfortably inside your mouth. Over time, the appliance puts gentle, consistent pressure on structures of the palate. The pressure stimulates development, causing the jaws to remodel. New bone remodelling is guided based on the patient’s treatment needs and aesthetic goals.
With these appliances, Dr. Anderson can:
- Straighten crooked teeth
- Improve facial symmetry
- Create a more attractive profile
- Define the jawline
- Open the airway for improved breathing, treating sleep apnea
- Relieve stress on the jaw joints and treat TMJ

Symptoms of TMJ
People who are suffering from TMJ (TMD) often experience a wide range of symptoms, commonly including jaw pain, severe headaches or migraines, ringing in the ears, and teeth grinding. Stress may worsen the symptoms and lead to dizziness and neck/shoulder pain. The most common cause of TMJ (TMD) is misaligned teeth (i.e., a bad bite), but it can also be caused by an injury from a blow to the jaw or face. In addition to daily pain, untreated TMJ (TMD) may lead to loose and worn teeth and degeneration of the joint and jaw bone.

What Does Treating TMJ Involve?
Treatment of TMJ (TMD) involves balancing the forces that cause improper muscle use and restoring a healthy joint position. When you arrive at our office, Dr. Anderson will review your history and thoroughly examine your jaw, related muscles and bones, and bite via precision digital equipment and 3D X-rays. After gathering that information, he’ll be able to diagnose the cause of your pain accurately and recommend a course of treatment to reduce or eliminate it. In many cases, Dr. Anderson can realign or adjust your jaw and bite, effectively ending the jaw pain, unbearable headaches or migraines, dizziness, and other symptoms associated with TMJ (TMD), all without painful or expensive surgeries.
