DO I NEED A TOOTH EXTRACTION?

Once your permanent teeth come in, they are meant to last a lifetime. However, sometimes having a tooth removed is necessary to maintain the health of your smile. Common reasons for extraction include:

  • Severe damage or trauma
  • Untreated tooth decay
  • Dental infection such that the tooth cannot be saved
  • Crowding, or when your mouth is too small to accommodate all of your adult teeth

Dr. Anderson and our team believe extractions are a last resort. We will always do everything possible to save your tooth through restorative procedures, such as root canals, fillings, and crowns. If our dentist determines that extraction is the best treatment for your case, we will schedule your procedure as soon as possible to provide much-needed relief.

Do I Need a Wisdom Tooth Extraction?

Your wisdom teeth are the third and final set of molars to come in. They typically come in when patients are between the ages of 17 and 25. Many patients need to have their wisdom teeth removal. This is a common procedure used to prevent painful complications caused when the wisdom teeth come in.

If left untreated, your wisdom teeth can:

  • Come in at the wrong angle
  • Come in impacted
  • Never erupt through the gum line at all, causing jaw pain and infections in the gum tissue

Wisdom teeth can also cause sinus issues, cavities, and damage to the surrounding teeth.

If you are experiencing issues with your wisdom teeth, call our office today. Dr. Anderson performs gentle wisdom tooth extractions to help our patients maintain optimal oral health.

What to Expect During a Tooth Extraction

First, Dr. Anderson will administer local anesthetic to numb your tooth. This will minimize any potential discomfort and make sure you don’t feel anything. Our team also offers sedation options to help you relax during your procedure. Once you are comfortable, our dentist will gently and safely remove the tooth.

If your tooth is impacted, it will require a minor surgical procedure. In this case, our dentist cuts away the gum and bone tissue to reach the tooth. Hard-to-remove teeth may be broken and removed in pieces. Our dentist will explain all of this to you prior to your extraction to make sure you understand the process in full.

How Long Does it Take for My Mouth to Heal?

The healing starts within the first two days but can take more than a week for your mouth to heal fully. Following your procedure, our dentist will prescribe antibiotics and pain relievers as needed. This will reduce your swelling and discomfort and prevent infection. We will also provide you with detailed post-operative care instructions when you return home. Be sure to follow these instructions closely to ensure as comfortable a recovery as possible.

As with any surgical procedure, keep an eye on it and check for swelling or bleeding. If it does not look like the wound is healing, then call us to follow up.

Do You Accept Walk-ins?

Yes, we do! Our office accepts new and returning patients on a walk-in basis. We also have same-day emergency appointments as scheduling permits. No matter your needs, we will do everything we can to give you the prompt, personalized care you deserve!

Do You Accept Insurance?

Yes, we accept many major insurance plans and will bill your insurance provider on your behalf. Be sure to ask a member of our friendly front desk team for more information on our insurance and payment policies. We will do everything we can to help you maximize your benefits.
