The purpose of endodontics (commonly called root canal therapy and other endodontic procedures) is to eliminate toothaches while maintaining the function of a tooth. In the past, dentists had to remove any teeth with diseased nerves. Modern dental techniques allow us to save the natural tooth in most cases, which is almost always preferable to replacing the tooth with a prosthetic or leaving open spaces in the bite.

DR. ANDERSON’S EXPERIENCE WITH ENDODONTICS

Few things seem to be worse than experiencing a toothache. We enjoy being able to remove this terrible pain from our clients while allowing them to retain the ability to chew and function with their teeth.

Dr. Anderson received additional dental training in endodontics after dental school and has been performing simple and complex procedures to solve problems of the inner tooth, including root canals, for over 10 years.

Purpose of Treatment

Dr. Anderson will extract the inner infected nerve tissue, clean and shape the canal the nerve was in, then seal that space with a biocompatible (i.e., safe for the body) material before finally restoring the tooth with a crown to restore functionality and strength to the damaged tooth.

Symptoms of Issue

Not all tooth pain or swelling means you need to see an endodontist. But if you’re having any of these symptoms, it’s time to see Dr. Anderson:

  • Inflammation and tenderness in the gums
  • Swelling of the face or jaws
  • Pain that wakes you up at night
  • Tenderness when chewing and biting
  • Tooth discoloration
  • Unexplained pain in the nearby lymph nodes
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold

These symptoms may be caused by bacterial infections (abscess), fractures, chips, injuries, or root fractures.

What this Treatment Involves

Dr. Anderson will clean the infected tissue out from inside your tooth and seal it from the inside. This treatment generally takes one to two visits to our office. The visits include X-rays before we start treatment. Then we’ll administer a local anesthetic, so you are completely comfortable during the procedure, place a dental dam in your mouth to keep the tooth isolated from any new bacteria, and make an opening in the surface of the tooth. Once we’ve got an opening, we’ll completely remove the infected pulp (nerve tissue inside the tooth). After that, we’ll shape, clean, and fill the space. In most cases, we can place the final crown or restoration the same day, saving our clients the time and inconvenience of another visit.
